How to Connect a Stereo System or Speakers to a TV
This article will show you how to connect a stereo system or speakers to a television. Many manufacturers’ televisions are covered by the instructions, including LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Sony, and Vizio.
What You’ll Need
A 4-6 foot analog audio cable with stereo RCA or miniplug jacks will most likely be needed. If your TV and stereo system both support HDMI connections, make sure you have those as well. Connect the speakers to the TV using the necessary audio cables until all of the tools are in place, and then switch on the TV and speakers.
How to Attach a Television to Speakers
- Clean up the area around the TV to make room for the speakers and give yourself some wiggle room to get all in place, then proceed to the next stage.
- Place the stereo receiver or amplifier as close to the TV as possible while keeping other devices within reach (i.e., leave room for your cable or satellite set-top box, DVD player, Roku, etc.). Otherwise, a longer link cable would be needed if the TV is more than 4–6 feet away from the stereo receiver.
- Make sure all equipment is switched off before attaching any cables.
- On the tv, look for the analog or digital audio output jack.
- The output for analog is usually called AUDIO OUT, and it can be two RCA jacks or a single 3.5 mm mini-jack. Locate the optical digital output or HDMI OUT port for digital sound.
- On your stereo receiver or amplifier, look for unused analog audio input.
- VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2, DVD, AUX, or TAPE are all appropriate analog inputs. The stereo or home theater receiver’s input is most likely an RCA jack. Locate an unused optical digital or HDMI input port for digital connections.
- Link the audio output from the television to the audio input of the receiver or amplifier using a cable with the necessary plugs on both ends.
- Your TV and speakers should now be properly connected.
What Should You Do If Your Speakers Aren’t Working?
If there is no sound, make sure the Speaker A/B switch is turned on. If the switch is turned off, no sound can reach the speaker system.
The TV menu is another place to look if you don’t hear sound after connecting the speakers to the TV. If your television has this function, you may need to switch off the internal speakers and turn on the television’s audio output.

If you activate the pause or mute function on your audio device, the sound will no longer be relayed through the TV to the speakers. If the volume on your TV is turned down or off, and the volume on your stereo system is muted, it will appear that something is wrong when all you need to do is unmute one or both devices.
Bluetooth-enabled surround sound speakers can attach to a nearby phone during the setup process (this may happen by mistake when you’re clicking buttons). Restart the speaker system and momentarily disable Bluetooth on any nearby devices if you suspect this is the cause of the speakers not playing any sound from the TV.

If anything, connecting the audio cables might be the only move you’re certain you completed correctly, but even that does not always work the first time. Some cables can be pushed in just far enough to hold them in place, but not far enough to allow them to function properly. Unplug all of the cables again and click harder this time to ensure that they lock into position. If the speakers’ volume is turned up, correctly connecting the audio cables can produce a tone.
